Georgia Florida Game or Florida Georgia Game????? Preview

Well its that time again. Its where UGA & UF fans are always exited for that one game at the end of October in Jacksonville FL. I've lived in Florida for 8 years & 6 in Georgia, and I've heard people say in FL "Florida Georgia Game"and folks in Georgia say "Georgia Florida Game". Wikipedea states "The Florida Georgia Classic"(Sorry Georgia) The Big College Rivialry started in Oct 1905 with Georgia's first 57-0 victory, then the following year Florida won 37-0.
The total of meeting between UGA & UF are 89 (according to Georgia) and 87 (according to Florida)

Back to the 2011 season. Right now Georgia's record is 5-2 (4-1) in the SEC and is tied with South Carolina, if Georgia beats Florida in Jacksonville & South Carolina loses to Arkansas. Georgia will control the eastern divison.
With Florida's bye week and losses to Alabama,LSU, and Auburn. Regaining the SEC Eastern division is out of the question.

With the Big SEC conference rivialry "The Florida Georgia Classic" is the best antisapated college rivalry game in the month of October.

And my prediction for "The Florida Georgia Classic" are The Georgia Bulldogs!!!!

Georgia claims victory over Ole Miss

With Georgia's victory over Ole Miss and their next home game in Athens Vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs. One question is UGA's special teams? The Georgia Bulldog's special teams surrendered a 81-yard punt reverse touchdown for Ole Miss Rebels, Bulldog's special teams got embarrassed by halftime. In the end Georgia claimed a 27-13 victory over Ole Miss.

This Saturday Mississippi State will be playing Georgia tomorrow afternoon in Athens. Last week the Mississippi State Bulldogs almost had an upset at home Vs. LA Tech, but Mississippi State tied it up and won 26-20 in overtime.

Saturday's game completed Georgia's first win for the 2011 season. Georgia scored 59 unanswered points against Coastal Carolina, but had a couple of turnovers including a fake punt. However UGA's defense kept Coastal Carolina's offense from scoring the entire time.

With Georgia's upcoming game at Ole Miss, can UGA's defense stop Ole Miss's pass rush offense? Both teams & coaches in situations to win Saturday's game at Oxford. Mark Richt head coach of Georgia starting his 10th season at 1-2 in week 4. Houston Nutt head coach of Ole Miss in his 4th season. Last Saturday Ole Miss had an embarrassing 30-7 loss to Vanderbilt, while fans of Ole Miss are calling for Nutt's resignation. Both jobs are at stake!!

Georgia & Ole Miss are 1-2 in the SEC. Both teams are in for an aggressive fight this Saturday afternoon.

Georgia Tech-Virginia Tech Preview

The winner of the last three meetings between Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech has gone on to capture the ACC championship.

For the defending champion Yellow Jackets to even have a chance of representing the Coastal Division in this year's conference title game, they must win Thursday night in Blacksburg -- no easy task considering how well the 20th-ranked Hokies are playing.

After a forgettable start to the season with back-to-back losses to Boise State and James Madison, Virginia Tech (6-2, 4-0) is playing like most expected. The offense is rolling, topping the 40-point mark five times during a six-game winning streak, and the program is first in the Coastal.

The Hokies, winners of the ACC title in 2007 and '08, haven't played since a 44-7 win over Duke on Oct. 23, when the offense racked up 491 yards and reached the 40-point mark for a fourth consecutive game -- a first since 2000.

"I do think we've got things to work on, but when you play well and you have success, it builds confidence," coach Frank Beamer said. "You can't talk your way into it. You've got to build it. The last couple of games, we've taken steps where we want to go."

Much of the reason Virginia Tech is in position to win seven in a row for the first time since opening 8-0 in 2005 stems from the play of quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

The senior leads the ACC with a 171.1 passer rating while throwing for 1,602 yards with 15 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also leads the Hokies with 527 rushing yards and needs 95 total yards to surpass Bryan Randall as the school's career leader for total offense.

"It all starts with Tyrod Taylor," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said. "You give him opportunities and he's going to make the most of them.

"I don't see a college quarterback playing any better in the country. Period. He might be the best dual-threat quarterback in the country."

Georgia Tech quarterback Joshua Nesbitt was receiving similar praise prior to the season, but he hasn't enjoyed as much success.

Nesbitt, averaging 165.6 yards of total offense, endured one of the worst performances of his four-year career in a 27-13 loss to Clemson on Oct. 23, managing 85 total yards. He needed 44 yards to break the ACC career record for yards rushing by a quarterback but was limited to two yards on 15 carries as Georgia Tech's three-game winning streak was snapped.

Nesbitt had much better success running the ball in a 28-23 upset win over fourth-ranked Virginia Tech last October. Although he finished 1 of 7 passing for 51 yards with an interception, Nesbitt rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns.

In three seasons under coach Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech's formula for success is running the ball behind the triple option. The Yellow Jackets (5-3, 3-2) average an FBS-best 317.4 rushing yards -- 102.6 better than Virginia Tech, which is second in the ACC.

Georgia Tech's offense struggled to get in gear against the Tigers, though, finishing with season lows in points and yards (325). The loss significantly hurt the Yellow Jackets' chances of returning to the title game, as they now need to beat the Hokies and hope they lose at least once more.

Georgia Tech, however, is simply trying to focus on what it can control.

"Everything (opponents) are throwing at us this season we've seen in practice," said running back Anthony Allen, third in the ACC with 692 rushing yards. "We've practiced it. We went over it in meetings. It's just a matter of us recognizing and executing when we get out there."

The Hokies, fourth in the conference against the run at 136.0 yards per game, hope to get a boost in their ground game with Ryan Williams expected to see more playing time.

Williams, a first-team All-ACC running back a year ago, played two series against the Blue Devils after missing the previous four games with a hamstring injury. The sophomore rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 14 attempts against Georgia Tech last season.

Virginia Tech has overcome losses to Boston College each of the last two seasons to exact revenge on the Eagles in the ACC championship game both times.
With both teams looking like they could contend for the conference crown again in 2009, the Hokies hope to avoid falling in that early hole this time around.
The fifth-ranked Hokies try to stay undefeated in conference play with their fifth straight win overall Saturday when they host the Eagles, going for their third consecutive ACC victory.
Boston College was ranked No. 2 when it knocked off No. 8 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Oct. 25, 2007. The Hokies responded by winning four straight before defeating the Eagles 30-16 in the conference championship game.

Virginia Tech did it again last season, taking a 30-12 win over Boston College in the ACC title game after suffering its first loss of the season 28-23 in Boston on Oct. 18.
The Hokies (4-1, 2-0) know that the Eagles (4-1, 2-1) are one of many teams hoping to keep them from a third straight conference title.

"Whenever you're back-to-back ACC champions, everybody's gunning for you," running back Josh Oglesby said. "Everybody's like, 'Oh Man! We play Virginia Tech this week.' Everybody's a little more souped up for practice. I think we're going to get everybody's best shot."
Oglesby is convinced Virginia Tech can withstand those shots and get its fourth conference title in six years.

"We've been there before. We know the feeling. We know what it takes to get back there," he said, "I think just knowing what it takes to get there, that's what keeps us moving."
Tyrod Taylor did a fine job keeping the Hokies moving last Saturday, completing 17 of 22 passes for a career-high 327 yards and two touchdowns without an interception to help Virginia Tech overcome 12 penalties in a 34-26 win at Duke.

Taylor hadn't been very efficient or productive through the first four games, completing 47.2 percent of his passes for 542 yards as the Hokies relied heavily on Ryan Williams and the second-most productive rushing attack in the conference with 203.2 yards per game.
But with Duke focused on bottling up Williams, coach Frank Beamer was pleased with the way Taylor and the rest of the offense stepped up.

"I think we're getting closer to being a good balanced offense," Beamer said. "We're able to run it, we're able to throw it and one helps the other out."
Beamer hopes for more of the same against a Boston College team looking to break into the Top 25 for the first time in 2009. After getting held to 54 yards in a 25-7 loss at Clemson in their conference opener, the Eagles have pulled out narrow wins at home over Wake Forest and Florida State.

Montel Harris broke free up the middle for a 42-yard touchdown run with 4:07 remaining to break a 21-all tie and help the Eagles to a 28-21 win over the Seminoles last Saturday. Harris finished with 179 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries as Boston College recovered after blowing an 18-point lead.

"We're a work in progress. I can't emphasize it enough, we have a long way to go but we've come a long way from that performance (at Clemson)," coach Frank Spaziani said. "It's a distant memory. As you always have to do, you have to put it behind you and move forward. We told the kids at the beginning we're working our way up the hill."

The Eagles are hoping to keep progressing with Dave Shinskie as their starting quarterback. Shinskie has completed 60.0 percent of his passes for 431 yards, five touchdowns and one interception in the last two games after splitting time with fellow freshman Justin Tuggle in the first three.

"I think we just found an identity on offense," Shinskie said. "We go out there and are just a little more pepped up. We have guys being more vocal in the huddle and on the practice field. I think our offense finally found itself."

Shinskie and Boston College hope to have the same success against the Virginia Tech defense that Duke did last week. The Hokies gave up plays of 48, 74, 55 and 34 yards in a lackluster performance against the Blue Devils.
Though he acknowledged his team had focus issues last week, Beamer said he thought it would benefit from the experience down the stretch.

"We talked yesterday. We've got seven games here, and only seven, and for me, making a great preparation for every game beginning this week is not too much to ask of each other," Beamer said. "So that's what we're going to attempt to do."

With seven astronauts and a host of experiments and equipment on board, space shuttle Discovery completed a flawless ascent into orbit Friday night to begin a two-day chase of the International Space Station. With Commander Rick "C.J. " Sturckow at the controls, the shuttle lifted off on-time at 11:59 p.m. EDT from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crew will rendezvous and dock with the station Sunday and the crew will begin transferring equipment to the outpost during the 13-day mission. After flying up on Discovery, Nicole Stott will trade places with station resident Tim Kopra, who went into space last month aboard Endeavour. Equipment and science racks for the orbiting laboratory are riding inside the Leonardo cargo module, which is secured tightly inside Discovery's payload bay. The module will be lifted out of Discovery and locked onto the station so the crew can transfer the gear efficiently. The treadmill named for comedian Stephen Colbert also is aboard Discovery and destined for the station.

All of the STS-127 crew members are doing well after today's landing."The folks that have worked this mission really deserve a lot of praise for what they got accomplished during the time that we were docked to the International Space Station," STS-127 Commander Mark Polansky said during an afternoon news conference Friday. "In addition to that, it's a tremendous pleasure and honor to bring back a great astronaut from Japan, Koichi Wakata."Wakata returned from the station as a member of the STS-127 crew after serving as the outpost's flight engineer since March. Replacing him aboard the station is Flight Engineer Tim Kopra. When asked how he is handling the return to Earth, Wakata replied, "When the hatch opened, I smelled the grass from the ground and was glad to be back home. Still feeling a little shaky when I walk, but I'm feeling very good."The 16-day mission showcased the international partnerships involved in the space station effort. Astronauts from five space agencies were on board the orbiting complex."It was truly an impressive demonstration of international collaboration all throughout this mission," said Canadian Space Agency Director General of Operations Benoit Marcotte.The astronauts' return to Houston's Ellington Field is tentatively set for about 5 p.m. Saturday.

Endeavour Lands at Kennedy Space Center

Endeavour Crew Prepares for Landing

Space shuttle Endeavour is scheduled to land at Florida's Kennedy Space Center today with a touchdown at 10:48 a.m. EDT. The shuttle would begin its descent from orbit with a deorbit engine firing at 9:41 a.m. Weather conditions at Kennedy are forecast to be favorable for landing, although a slight chance of rain is possible. A second opportunity exists for a landing in Florida today, beginning with a deorbit engine firing at 11:16 a.m., leading to a 12:22 p.m. touchdown. No other shuttle landing sites are being considered for a landing today. If weather prevents a landing today, alternate landing sites would be called up for Saturday’s landing opportunities. Thursday, Endeavour Commander Mark Polansky and Pilot Doug Hurley checked out the systems the shuttle will use as it returns home, finding everything in excellent shape. In yet another deft handoff maneuver, the space shuttle robotic arm grabbed the Japanese Exposed Section cargo carrier from the space station robotic arm. Endeavour Commander Mark Polansky and Mission Specialist Julie Payette then used the shuttle arm to place the cargo carrier back into the shuttle payload bay.The Exposed Section was launched with two science experiments and a communication system that were transferred to the Kibo Exposed Facility earlier in the mission.

Crews Focus on Robotics, Spacewalk Preparations

Sunday morning, the space shuttle robotic arm grabbed the Japanese Exposed Section cargo carrier from the International Space Station's robotic arm and carefully placed the cargo carrier back into Endeavour’s payload bay bringing to close this mission’s robotics work on the space station’s new porch. The 13 crew members aboard the space station and space shuttle transitioned back to work by tucking the Exposed Section away, hosting a joint crew news conference and studying the new procedures for Monday’s fifth and final spacewalk. Spacewalkers Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn prepared their spacesuits and tools and reviewed procedures. Monday's spacewalk is expected to run about six and a half hours. The Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA), which along with a similar Russian system removes carbon dioxide from the station’s atmosphere, is continuing to operate in manual mode. The primary heater tripped a circuit breaker Saturday afternoon, and since then the ground team has been manually operating the backup heater.

Spacewalkers Dave Wolf and Chris Cassidy began the STS-127 mission’s third spacewalk about 30 minutes ahead of schedule, at 10:32 a.m. EDT.Wolf and Cassidy first will remove multilayer insulation from the Kibo module and prepare the Japanese Exposed Section payloads for their transfer from the Exposed Section to the Exposed Facility on Thursday. Then they will focus on battery replacements. The space station power system is a photovoltaic system that gathers solar power and stores it in batteries. Wolf and Cassidy will replace four of six old batteries in one of the six station power channels, channel 2B. In preparation for the task, the old batteries have been drained and the electrical loads normally handled by 2B have been placed on different power channels.The new batteries are stored on the Integrated Cargo Carrier – Vertical Light Deployable, or ICC-VLD. Endeavour astronauts Doug Hurley and Julie Payette are using the space station robotic arm to move the ICC-VLD to the spacewalk worksite area near the Port 6 truss. Wolf and Cassidy will work together in a carefully rehearsed process to remove insulation from the old Port 6 batteries, install scoops to gently remove them, pass the batteries back and forth to a stowage location on the ICC-VLD, and repeat the process to replace them with the new batteries.Each new battery assembly consists of 38 lightweight Nickel Hydrogen cells and associated electrical and mechanical equipment. Two battery assemblies connected in series are capable of storing a total of 8 kW of electrical power. This power is fed to the space station via the Battery Charge/Discharge Unit and Direct Current Switching Unit respectively. The batteries have a design life of 6.5 years and can exceed 38,000 charge/discharge cycles at 35% depth of discharge. Each battery measures 40” by 36” by 18” and weighs 375 pounds.

The joint crew of space shuttle Endeavour and the International Space Station was awakened at 6:33 a.m. EDT with the song “Learning to Fly,” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, for former Navy SEAL Chris Cassidy. Cassidy is making his first space flight in space, the 500th person to do so. Today, the 13-member crew will remove the Integrated Cargo Carrier – Vertical Light Deployable from Endeavour’s payload bay and place it at the base of the station’s mobile transporter. The crew also will repair the station’s Advanced Resistive Exercise Device, using new parts delivered by Endeavour.

Crews Focus on Robotics Work and Spacewalk PrepsThe astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station complex will take a break from spacewalking today, but continue their robotics work to prepare for the following day’s excursion. With focused inspection of Endeavour’s heat shield no longer necessary, the crew will have additional time to complete transfers of supplies and equipment from the shuttle to the station and review plans for Monday’s second spacewalk of the mission. Crew members will begin the day by grappling the Integrated Cargo Carrier in the rear of Endeavour’s cargo bay, lifting it and handing it off to the station’s robotic arm. The two craft are scheduled to mate at 1:55 p.m. Prior to the docking, Endeavour will perform the standard Rendezvous Pitch Maneuver, a back flip that allows station astronauts to take high resolution photos of the shuttle heat shield for analysis by Mission Control in Houston.

Lori Beth Garver was confirmed as NASA's deputy administrator. As administrator, Bolden will lead the NASA team and manage its resources to advance the agency's missions and goals. "It is an honor to have been nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate to lead this great NASA team," Bolden said. "Today, we have to choose. Either we can invest in building on our hard-earned world technological leadership or we can abandon this commitment, ceding it to other nations who are working diligently to push the frontiers of space." "If we choose to lead, we must build on our investment in the International Space Station, accelerate development of our next generation launch systems to enable expansion of human exploration, enhance NASA's capability to study Earth's environment, lead space science to new achievements, continue cutting-edge aeronautics research, support the innovation of American entrepreneurs, and inspire a rising generation of boys and girls to seek careers in science, technology, engineering and math." Bolden's confirmation marks the beginning of his second stint with NASA. His 34-year career with the Marine Corps included 14 years as a member of NASA's Astronaut Office. After joining the office in 1980, he traveled to orbit four times aboard the space shuttle between 1986 and 1994, commanding two of the missions. The launch pad is equipped with a lightning protection system of wires that is intended to steer bolts away from the shuttle. "We've seen nothing so far that shows anything affected any of the systems," said Mike Moses, chairman of the pre-launch Mission Management Team.Two of the strikes were strong enough to trigger an evaluation by engineers just to make sure all of Endeavour's systems are ready for flight. For 50 years, NASA’s been famous for counting backward from 10 to zero. But a final countdown is now under way that will stand out among them all. After 126 space shuttle missions, only eight remain before the fleet is scheduled to retire. That’s eight flights remaining to use the unique capabilities of the shuttle to finish construction on the International Space Station and prepare it for life after shuttle. Each flight is unique and extremely complicated. Attention to detail and planning will be needed to be successful. There are no easy flights remaining and there may be pauses in this countdown that will ensure the highest chance of mission success. The shuttle will fly each flight when it’s ready. Take the time to look and really study the remaining shuttle flights. Here’s a close up look at the countdown of flights:

8: STS-127—A Mission for all Nations The International Space Station has been growing steadily over the past few years, but the one thing it still doesn’t have is a porch. STS-127 will take care of that. Space shuttle Endeavour will deliver the external facility for Japan’s Kibo module during that mission, completing the Japanese complex on the space station and providing a science platform outside the station walls. And if the international flavor of the cargo isn’t enough, it will be the first shuttle mission to visit the station after its expansion to a six-person crew, when the station will have representatives from all five international partners on board. “It just brings a lot of different nations together,” STS-127 Commander Mark Polansky said. “I look at space and what we’ve done with the International Space Station as a wonderful example of how we can cooperate. We all have a common goal, and we all work together. We all have cultural differences, and somehow we put all that aside and we get the job done.” The installation of the new external facility will be the perfect opportunity to demonstrate all that. “You’ll have this truly integrated operation, where you’ve got the Canadian robotic arm holding the new big piece of Japanese hardware, brought up by a United States vehicle,” said Holly Ridings, the lead space station flight director for the mission. “If you think about the integration of all those parts and pieces, it’s really amazing how far we’ve come.”

7: STS-128—Stepping Up Station Science

Image credit: NASAWith the increasing size of the space station crew comes an increasing amount of crew time available to be spent on science. STS-128 will bring up new projects for them to spend that time on. Tucked inside the multi-purpose logistics module to be carried up inside Discovery’s cargo bay will be two new experiment racks – the materials science research rack-1 and the fluids integrated rack. The materials rack will allow the crews of the space station to conduct experiments on such diverse materials as metals, glasses, crystals and ceramics. They’ll be able to study how materials mix and solidify or how crystals grow, outside the confines of the Earth’s gravity. If it’s not covered by the materials rack, there’s a fair chance that it will be by the fluids rack. Colloids, gels, bubbles, boiling and cooling are just a few of the long list of areas astronauts will study using the fluids rack. Of course, with all the additional science being done on the station, the crews will need more room in which to store the fruits of their labor. So Discovery will also bring up a second Minus Eighty Laboratory Freezer for ISS – or MELFI, as it’s known. And one other way that the STS-128 (and STS-125 and STS-127) mission will further the cause of science is by taking part in crew seat vibration tests that will help engineers on the ground understand how astronauts experience launch. They’ll then use the information to design the crew seats that will be used in future Constellation launches.

6: STS-129—Spares to Space There will be lots of reasons to miss the space shuttles when they retire, but one of the most practical ones will be the lack of transportation options for large space station equipment.

Image credit: NASAIn addition to all the modules and truss segments that the shuttle has been hauling into space for the past 10 years, there have been occasional ORUs – or orbital replacement units, a fancy word for spare parts – many of which were big. Too big, in fact, to be brought up on any other vehicle that visits the space station or any that’s being planned. “What you’ve done,” Kirk Shireman, International Space Station program deputy manager, said, “is take away the 18-wheeler and replace it with a bunch of small pickup trucks.” For STS-129, the 18-wheeler’s cargo hold will be full of spares to keep the station going after the big wheels have stopped rolling. There will be a spare control moment gyroscope, a spare nitrogen tank assembly and a spare ammonia tank assembly. A spare latching end effector for the station’s robotic arm, and a spare trailing umbilical system for the rail car that the arm travels on. A spare antenna and a spare high pressure gas tank. There will be plenty more spares to come before the last shuttle flight, but STS-129 is definitely a start. “This should last us for some time,” Shireman said.

5: STS-130—A Room with a View STS-130 will represent a major milestone mission, as it will be bringing up the last major United States addition to the space station. And as usual, last doesn’t equal least. Not only will space shuttle Endeavour be bringing up the final node – this one named Tranquility – and giving the expanded crew plenty of space to spread out in, but as this node will come attached to the six-windowed cupola, it’s likely to become everyone’s favorite room on the station. “This flight will, I think, grab the public’s attention,” Shireman said. “It’s just going to be a really, really neat module for those on board. The dream of being able to go out and just have an unencumbered view of space – we’ll have it. You can open up all the windows and look around and really feel like you’re out there.” The windows aren’t just for fun, however – they’ll be working windows. As more cargo vehicles begin frequenting the space station, the station’s robotic arm is going to be called into action to capture some of them as they approach and guide them into their docking port. A good view of that operation will be a welcomed help to those at the controls of the arm.

4: STS-131 — Experiment Experience

Image credit: NASAMuch of the science done on the International Space Station involves difficult-to-understand concepts with long, hard-to-pronounce names. But the STS-131 mission will prove that’s not always the case. The experiment racks space shuttle Atlantis will deliver to the space station inside its multi-purpose logistics module focus on things regular people here on Earth do every day: exercise and look out the window. The experiment racks that STS-131 will deliver to the station – the window observational research facility and the muscle atrophy research and exercise system rack – are pretty much exactly what they sound like. The window observational research facility is designed to beef up the work that astronauts are able to do looking out the window of the Destiny laboratory by adding cameras, multispectral and hyperspectral scanners, camcorders and sensors. With those instruments, the crew will be able to study global climates, land and sea formations and crop weather damage like never before. Meanwhile, the muscle atrophy research and exercise system rack – or MARES – will give the crew members a way to assess the strength of their muscles while in space. The deterioration of muscles not used while astronauts are floating in microgravity has long been a concern for space programs. This rack will mean that the crew members don’t have to wait until they’re back on solid ground to find out how their time in space affected their health. Instead, the MARES will help them exercise seven different human joints, gauge the strength of the muscles around those joints and decide how the countermeasures designed to prevent muscle atrophy are working.

3: STS-132—Finishing Touches The last International Space Station modules to be delivered by a space shuttle will come up on the STS-132 mission. The last space station module to be delivered by a shuttle also happens to be the first Russian module delivered to the ISS by a shuttle. It will be filled, for the launch, with pressurized U.S. cargo, installed by a Canadian robotic arm and include a European robotic arm – all of which underscores once more the very international nature of the International Space Station.

2: STS-133—Spares in Space STS-133 was originally scheduled to be the final shuttle flight of the fleet, and as such, it was packed to the brim with one last load of spares. There are debris shields for the Zvezda service module, and antennas for the S-Band communication system. There’s a spare ammonia tank assembly, a spare flex hose rotary coupler, several remote power control modules and even a spare arm for the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator. “It isn’t glamorous, but it’s really important for the space station to execute its mission,” Shireman said. Besides, even though none of the equipment will actually be installed, it will still take at least three spacewalks to get it all in position to be ready when needed. And this flight (along with the next) will also be used to try out a new relative navigation sensor that could be used on Orion, the next U.S. vehicle that will take astronauts to the International Space Station. So there should still be excitement to spare, as well as equipment. “There are no boring shuttle flights,” John Shannon, Space Shuttle program manager, said.

1: STS-134—Shuttle Says Goodbye It’s appropriate that the last flight of the Space Shuttle Program is scheduled to bring up the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. Designed to detect cosmic rays, it should continue the tradition of discovery that the space shuttles have fueled for almost three decades. Even so, it’s unlikely that will make it any easier to say goodbye. Shannon said it’s hard to imagine the end of the program at this point, but he expects it to be bittersweet. “I’m sure it will be emotional,” he said. “But I suspect that it will not be sadness over the passing of that era, but happiness that we were a part of it. The assembly of the space station could not have been done without the space shuttle, and the assembly of the space station is one of the great engineering achievements of mankind. “So the space shuttle will have done a good job.”
